Infectious Disease
Breaking Down Barriers to Care and Treatment
Preventing the spread and promoting the proper treatment of infectious diseases, including HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis (TB), are a top priority for Project HOPE.
Thus, AIDS prevention education has been incorporated into existing projects as well as new programs and activities specifically targeting HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections. HOPE’s programs range from increasing health professionals’ awareness of prevention and treatment to general public educational campaigns to reduce stigma associated with HIV/AIDS.
Project HOPE’s approach to TB education focuses on five basic components: laboratory diagnosis, effective treatment, continuous and uninterrupted drug supply, use of standard information system to improve performance, and government policies and support. To these basics are added: increasing public and patient knowledge about TB, training of health staff, monitoring/supervision, and quality improvement, and special approaches to high risk populations, especially prisoners.
